Unboxed: The Body Edition - Event Recap

On 14 December 2025, OmaHub hosted its first community event, Unboxed: The Body Edition, bringing together fashion, wellness, and meaningful conversation around body image, health, and representation.

Hosted at Gather House, the event created a space for women to explore what it means to feel confident in their bodies, understand their health, and navigate fashion in a way that celebrates individuality rather than conformity.

Why We Created Unboxed

At OmaHub, we believe fashion is more than clothing. It reflects culture, identity, confidence, and how we see ourselves.

As we continue building a platform that connects customers with credible African fashion brands, we recognised that conversations about fashion cannot happen in isolation. How we shop, what we wear, and how we feel in our clothes are often deeply connected to our relationship with our bodies.

Unboxed was created to open up those conversations and bring together experts and designers who are actively shaping them.

The Wellness Panel

We were delighted to welcome an incredible panel of speakers:

  • Dr Joyce, Founder of Aranini

  • Ife Atoyebi, Nutritionist

  • Desire Iyama, Founder and Creative Director of Desire Iyama

  • Esther Iniobio, Founder and Creative Director of Esther Iniobio

Together, they shared insights on health, nutrition, body awareness, and the realities of designing for diverse body types.

Understanding What Healthy Means for You

One of the key takeaways from Dr Joyce's session was the importance of understanding your own health metrics and regularly checking in with your body.

While tools such as BMI remain widely used despite their limitations, particularly for people of colour, the reality is that they are unlikely to disappear anytime soon. Rather than relying on a single measurement, Dr Joyce encouraged attendees to understand their personal baseline, monitor changes over time, and seek regular health checks.

The discussion reinforced an important message: beauty is not only external. Looking and feeling your best begins with understanding your health from the inside out.

Nutrition Beyond the Plate

Nutritionist Ife Atoyebi challenged attendees to think about wellness more holistically.

One particularly memorable insight was that a healthy day often begins the night before. Meal preparation, sleep, routine, and stress levels all influence how we wake up, how we nourish ourselves, and ultimately how we feel.

The conversation highlighted that wellness is rarely isolated. Stress impacts eating habits, energy levels, confidence, and even how we engage with our wardrobes. While maintaining healthy habits can sometimes feel difficult, especially during demanding periods, the panel emphasised the importance of continually finding our way back to routines that support our wellbeing.

Designing for Real Women

Designer Desire Iyama shared her personal experience with insulin resistance, a condition that is not always openly discussed within our communities.

She also provided insight into how thoughtful design can better serve women's bodies. For example, she incorporates additional room in the hip area of certain garments to accommodate curvier silhouettes, demonstrating how intentional design decisions can significantly improve fit and comfort.

The discussion raised important questions about sizing standards and whether the fashion industry is adequately reflecting the diversity of women's bodies.

Esther Iniobio reinforced the importance of knowing your measurements. While many people only focus on weight or waist size, understanding your full measurements can help improve shopping experiences, support better garment fit, and even help identify significant physical changes that may warrant further health investigation.

Community, Fashion and Connection

Following the panel, guests enjoyed refreshments generously provided by Gather House, including salmon and focaccia, plantain with peanut butter, hibiscus drinks, and light bites while networking with fellow attendees.

The event also featured an OmaHub pop-up showcasing a curated selection of African fashion brands, including:

  • Henri Uduku

  • Bloom Womenswear

  • Melira

  • Tem Ade

  • Spice of Lagos

  • Afriquekod

  • Ehbonyo & Ehbs Co

  • Liv and Eve

Guests also enjoyed live model presentations featuring bespoke pieces from Royalty by Mojisola and Soft Aiv, showcasing both bridal and suiting collections.

Impact

Beyond the conversations, Unboxed demonstrated the power of bringing community together around fashion and wellness.

The pop-up generated close to ₦10 million in sales value, providing visibility and commercial opportunities for participating designers while connecting customers directly with brands that celebrate African craftsmanship and design.

Looking Ahead

Unboxed: The Body Edition was only the beginning.

The conversations around body image, wellness, sizing, representation, and health are ongoing, and we look forward to exploring them further through future editions.

If you have ideas for future Body Edition topics, would like to collaborate, or would like to contribute to the conversation, we would love to hear from you.

Because fashion should not simply fit the body. It should honour it.
